It was attempted to popularise her works, information about her life and thought, as well as the cult of her, knowledge about Christian mysticism and the revival of religious life. Two important bibliographies presenting the reception of Teresa in Poland: one by Stefania Ciesielska-Borkowska (1939) and the other one by Benignus Wanat (1972) require complementing and corrections, which should find reflection in contemporary editions and catalogues. The paper presents all the editions of works by Teresa (fragments, all works, collections of works, as well as paraphrases), released in Polish in the 19th-century books and periodicals. It corrects the mistakes in bibliographical descriptions, which result from mistakes in the publications themselves, as well as errors in attribution. It refers to the authorship of anonymous translations and their undetermined bases, it characterises briefly the environments in which Saint Teresa’s works were translated and published. It presents the religious, literary, social and scientific purposes accompanying the texts by Teresa, as well as translation, editorial and ideological assumptions. It shows the editions of Saint Teresa’s texts in translations or paraphrases by: Sebastian Nucerin, Ignacy Hołowiński, Nina Łuszczewska, Eleonora Ziemięcka, Michał Bohusz Szyszko, Eleonora z Paprockich Szemiothowa, Zygmunt Krasiński, Lucjan Siemieński, Ignacy Domeyko, Karmela Wiktima od Jezusa (Amalia Zenopolska), Tadeusz Miciński, Henryk Piotr Kossowski, as well as anonymous translators.
Marta M. Trzy możliwe drogi https://studiahistoricolitteraria.up.krakow.pl/article/view/8907
This article aims to present three hypotheses about how the preaching treatise of the Catalan author, Francesc Eiximenis, entitled 'Ars praedicandi populo', ended up in Krakow in the library of Mikołaj Spycymir. For this purpose, three codices, which contain copies of the Eiximenis treatise, were compared to each other. The article also presented in more detail the biography of Nicolaus Spycymir, the owner of the oldest copy of the treatise. The first two hypotheses are related to the Franciscan Order and diplomatic travels and pilgrimages to Compostela. They seem not to be as well-grounded in the sources as the third hypothesis, which concerns the Polish delegations to the Council of Basel and Council delegations coming to Kraków. One of the delegates of the Council was Marc Bonfill, a Catalan theologian and well-known preacher, associated, like Eiximenis, with the University of Lerida and Girona. The article also pays special attention to Bonfill’s associate, Stanisław Sobniowski, who was a close friend of Spycimir. It is possible that Spycymir obtained the treatise on the preaching arts through these connections (Bonfill or Sobniowski). This hypothesis, however, requires further research.
Katarzyna Setkowicz Prawa autorskie (c) 2021 Annales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracoviensis | Studia Historicolitteraria https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2021-12-23 2021-12-23 21 32 47 10.24917/20811853.21.2 O wpływie spuścizny Świętej Teresy z Ávili na piśmiennictwo i kulturę polskiego baroku https://studiahistoricolitteraria.up.krakow.pl/article/view/8910
The subject of this article is to discuss the penetration of influences of Spanish mysticism, in particular, the works of Saint Teresa of Ávila, on the literature and culture of the Polish Baroque. The intercultural influence of Spanish mysticism on Polish artists is reflected in the translations of the writings of Saint Teresa of Ávila. The considerations focus on the influence of the mysticism of Saint Teresa on mystical autobiographies and anonymous poetry of Carmelite nuns from Krakow from the 17th and 18th centuries. The reflection also covers the centres of the veneration of the saint in Poland, in services and prayer books, and her popularisation through art. Mystical influences are also visible in the poetry of the 17th and 18th centuries, including poetry by Kasper Twardowski, Sebastian Grabowiecki, Stanisław Grochowski, Mikołaj Mieleszko, Zbigniew Morsztyn, Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski, Elżbieta Drużbacka, and Konstancja Benisławska. The Polish-Spanish ties situate the research issues undertaken in a comparative context, without which the studies on post-Tridentine spirituality would not have produced real achievements.
The article presents selected mechanisms of communication between the Polish participants of the Napoleonic campaign in 1808–1812 and the local population behind the Pyrenees. The sources of information were the memoirs of Polish soldiers fighting on the Iberian Peninsula in the Grande Armée. Even though a significant part of the memoirs focuses on the military aspects of the participation of Poles in the Peninsular War, several do provide a whole spectrum of information about the daily lives of soldiers on foreign ground and many observations regarding the customs of their brothers in arms – mainly the French – as well as the local population. Among the fragments devoted to the non-military aspects of their stay on the Iberian Peninsula, the remarks on the attempts at communication – both verbal and non-verbal – between Poles and Spaniards seem to be particularly interesting. The purpose of this article is to explain why, in many situations, efficient communication could not take place in an intermediary language (French) and how the Polish soldiers dealt with lexical and grammatical structures in the previously unknown Spanish language. It is worth pointing out that language transfer is clearly noticeable – both from the native language of the soldiers (Polish) and from French, which most of Napoleonic soldiers learnt as their first Romance language.
Magdalena Krzyżostaniak Prawa autorskie (c) 2021 Annales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracoviensis | Studia Historicolitteraria https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2021-12-23 2021-12-23 21 75 86 10.24917/20811853.21.4 Romantyzm krańców Europy. Portugalia, Polska i Chrystus narodów https://studiahistoricolitteraria.up.krakow.pl/article/view/8913
This article tentatively provides acomparative outlook on Polish and Portuguese Romanticism. Taking as a starting point the famous parallel between the opposite ends of Europe sketched by the 19th-century historian Joachim Lelewel, the author claims that Polish and Portuguese literature, although they had almost no direct contact with each other, participated in the same system of cultural coordinates established by European Romanticism. At the same time, both nations had some sort of dispute or clash with Europe, developing syndromes of inferiority, as well as megalomaniac visions of their moral superiority. Almeida Garrett and Alexandre Herculano tried to provide a solution, harmonising their country with its European context. The conclusion accentuates the uttermost victory of this harmonising vision, presenting the contemporary Portuguese culture as fully Europeanised and contrasting it with the doubts concerning European identity that may be observed in contemporary Poland.
Ewa A. Wizerunek Portugalii w "Czterech powstaniach" Karola Hoffmana https://studiahistoricolitteraria.up.krakow.pl/article/view/8914
The aim of this article is to analyse the image of Portugal as presented by Karol Hoffman in his book 'Cztery powstania czyli krótki wykład sposobów jakimi dobijały się o niepodległość Grecja, Holandia, Portugalia i Polska' [Four insurrections that is how Greece, Holland, Portugal, and Poland were fighting for their independence] (1837). Hoffman creates an analogy between the situation of Poland in the partition era and the situation of Portugal when it was united with Spain under the Iberian Union (1580–1640). Comparing Polish efforts with the efforts of the representatives of other European nations,Hoffman tries to revealthe causes ofthe defeat of Poles. Wspomnienia Piotra Falkenhagena-Zaleskiego z podroży do Hiszpanii (1843) https://studiahistoricolitteraria.up.krakow.pl/article/view/8915
Among the accounts of travels in Spain in the 1st half of the 19th century, there is a rather unknown memoir of Piotr Falkenhagen-Zaleski, written on the basis of his 1843 experiences. This exceptionally capable and flexible emigrant began his career in international trade, having successfully tried his hand at journalism and politics in the past. He became an employee at the Henry Hall department store in London, and then opened his own company of the same sort, establishing contacts in many European countries. The travel to Spain aimed at securing another contract. It appears that he did not achieve this goal. On the other hand, the stay behind the Pyrenees, mainly in Barcelona and Madrid, and the very travel from France to Spain allowed the Polish traveller to become familiar with two elements of the Spanish (political and cultural) reality through an incident with the Carlists and the corrida spectacle. He put those experiences in an interesting, although brief report from Spain.
Adam Kucharski Prawa autorskie (c) 2021 Annales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracoviensis | Studia Historicolitteraria https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2021-12-23 2021-12-23 21 112 130 10.24917/20811853.21.7 „Hiszpania! Obraz Hiszpanii na przełomie XIX i XX wieku w polskich listach z podróży https://studiahistoricolitteraria.up.krakow.pl/article/view/8916
Modern Polish ideas about the Iberian Peninsula can often be summarised in slogans: azure sky, beautiful women, bullfighting, Don Quixote from La Mancha. Has this image of Spain been with us for centuries, or has it been “produced” by modern mass tourism? The aim of this article is to analyse travel texts from the 19th and 20th centuries describing journeys around the Iberian Peninsula and an attempt to answer the question of what Spain looks like in the eyes of Poles deprived of their own statehood. Is it terra incognita, an exotic country with a rich history, in which travellers find a reflection in architecture and customs, fascinated by Madrid, Barcelona, and Salamanca? Or maybe it evokes disappointment? The article compares travel letters by four Polish travellers and historians: Aleksander Hirschberg, Adolf Pawiński, Józef Wawel-Louis, and Stanisław Starża. The analysis of the letters was divided into thematic blocks: historical Polish-Spanish relations, perceptions and impressions, opinions about Spaniards and Spanish women, and cultural controversies (corrida, cockfighting).
Aleksandra Ewelina Mikinka Prawa autorskie (c) 2021 Annales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracoviensis | Studia Historicolitteraria https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2021-12-23 2021-12-23 21 131 146 10.24917/20811853.21.8 Historyk w podróży, czyli Adolfa Pawińskiego wędrówki po Półwyspie Iberyjskim ("Hiszpania. We are not dealing with a perieghesis in the nature of a scientific report or a sightseeing guide, but with a collection of texts written with the Polish reader in mind. The correspondence was to be published in the Warsaw press. This explains the volume’s character, content, and form. Pawiński wanted to give a complete picture of Spain, which he visited primarily as a historian, archivist, and tourist. Knowledge of the Spanish language allowed him to get closer to the Spanish world and understand it better. The description of the country is picturesque and, at the same time, historical. In Pawiński’s view, Spain is an “agglomerate”. Within the comparative method of presenting the Parnassian palimpsests, as 'The Chinese Lyric Book' ('Cancioneiro Chinês', 1890) by António Feijó and 'Chinese Flute' ('Fletnia chińska', 1922) by Leopold Staff are categorised, the thesis about the independent status of the works in question was built. Modernist visions of the Orient, understood to date a paraphrase or an adaptation of Chinese poetry read in translations from French, gain the status of original works. In view of blurring the differences between the European adaptations – Portuguese poem and Polish poetic prose, based on Oriental motifs drawn from two different French sources (translations): Judith Gautier’s and Franz Touissant’s works – and the Chinese original, the methodological approach to the text as to a palimpsest is justified. Feijó’s “Chinese Poetry” and Oriental poetic landscapes in Staff’s prose are therefore independent literary works, analysed in parallel, as mirror reflections of the fascination with the Orient’s culture. The literary works in question fully deserve the title of cultural texts, the recipient of which will be a Polish reader, a lover of poetry inspired by French Parnassianism.
Anna Kalewska Prawa autorskie (c) 2021 Annales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracoviensis | Studia Historicolitteraria https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2021-12-23 2021-12-23 21 167 200 10.24917/20811853.21.10 Madryckie place w relacjach wybranych polskich podróżników w XIX i na początku XX wieku https://studiahistoricolitteraria.up.krakow.pl/article/view/8919
This article presents the perception of Madrid squares as viewed by Polish travellers in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The squares functioned for centuries as key areas of a city, both for the residents and visitors. In Spain, they were also an important element of culture and urban planning. Plaza Mayor – a unique European city square – was established in that country. Therefore, it may be assumed that the squares, playing a leading role in the analysed urban space, are one of the main tourist destinations. The aim of the article was to analyse the accounts of Polish travellers who came to Madrid in the 19th century and attempt to answer the following questions: what role the squares played during the time of those travels, which square made the greatest impression on the writers and why. The author also wanted to gain a better understanding of the aesthetic sensitivity and architectural and urban awareness of the Polish travellers. The analysis was carried out on the basis of source texts and historical studies. The presented image of public spaces was juxtaposed with iconographic and cartographic sources. The article shows that the Polish travellers staying in Madrid in the 19th and early 20th centuries limited their urban strolls to only a few squares, and the most important ones were approached with critical assessment.
Natalia Bursiewicz Prawa autorskie (c) 2021 Annales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracoviensis | Studia Historicolitteraria https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2021-12-23 2021-12-23 21 201 220 10.24917/20811853.21.11 Ekspresja i empatia. Tauromachia okiem Reymonta ("Los toros") https://studiahistoricolitteraria.up.krakow.pl/article/view/8920
Reymont wrote the short story, 'Los toros', in the year 1907 after coming back from Spain, where he witnessed a corrida in San Sebastián. The choice of the genre was intentional. The writer used it to reflect the realities of life and depict a group portrait of Spaniards, in which he succeeded without a doubt, using all with his literary imagination and ability to make his works metaphoric. Baffled by the corrida as an element of Spanish culture, Reymont did not express his moral approval of torturing animals (bulls and horses) on stage. On the contrary, his narration is full of sympathy and expressions that indicate emotional engagement. The turning point, the act of pardon performed by the young shepherd and the narrator’s friend towards the bull, indicates that Reymont’s reception of the corrida was empathic. Now, we had two conclusions on the contesting of the phenomenon. Reymont’s work was used by the French Chamber of Deputies as a literary example of disapproval of bloody spectacles that are justified by tradition.
Dorota Samborska-Kukuć Prawa autorskie (c) 2021 Annales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracoviensis | Studia Historicolitteraria https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2021-12-23 2021-12-23 21 221 234 10.24917/20811853.21.12 Brazylijski rejs „Lwowa” na łamach „Świata” i „Tygodnika Ilustrowanego” https://studiahistoricolitteraria.up.krakow.pl/article/view/8921
The aim of this article is to compare the modelling of media and memoir coverage of the Brazilian voyage of the “Lviv” in 1923 in two popular illustrated cultural magazines of the interwar period: Świat and Tygodnik Ilustrowany. To reconstruct the forms the message, publications from the years 1922–1925 were traced, i.e., those printed before, during, and shortly after the voyage. Using the comparative method and editorial collation, B. Pawłowicz’s and T. Dębicki’s reports published in the magazines were compared with their first book editions. As a result of this contextual analysis, the author shows how the choice of the information strategy pursued by the periodical influenced the modelling of the travel message. This information strategy also determined the reduction of the components presented and led to the creation of two separate stories, bringing people closer to the reality of life in São Vicente, Portugal, or the Brazilian state.
Monika Gabryś-Sławińska Prawa autorskie (c) 2021 Annales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracoviensis | Studia Historicolitteraria https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2021-12-23 2021-12-23 21 235 255 10.24917/20811853.21.13 Królestwo Boże (Józefa Czapskiego podróż do Hiszpanii w roku 1930) https://studiahistoricolitteraria.up.krakow.pl/article/view/8922
The author of the article describes a trip to Spain made by Józef Czapski in 1930. This outstanding painter and essayist, witness to the Katyń massacre, co-creator of the Parisian magazine "Kultura" [Culture] and Polish intellectual life in exile, at the time of visiting Madrid and its nearby areas for nearly two months was still a young artist, looking for the painting poetics closest to his soul. The visits to the Prado brought him two great discoveries: the works of El Greco and Goya. For Czapski, El Greco is a captivating example of religious painting and simultaneously – fidelity to the vision, the way of seeing the world. Goya fascinated Czapski with the thematic and stylistic range of his art – from “official” court portraits to dramatic records of nearly surreal visions, reflecting the artist’s fundamental belief in human depravity. The trip to Spain also had another meaning for Czapski – it was in a way a journey in the footsteps of St. Teresa of Avila, broadly: a reflection on the role of mystical experience in the spiritual life of man. From these two perspectives: artistic and religious, the encounter with the Spanish culture appears to be one of the more important and fateful episodes in the biography of Józef Czapski.
Andrzej Franaszek Prawa autorskie (c) 2021 Annales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracoviensis | Studia Historicolitteraria https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2021-12-23 2021-12-23 21 256 271 10.24917/20811853.21.14 Las polacas w Buenos Aires: prostytutki w historii i kulturze https://studiahistoricolitteraria.up.krakow.pl/article/view/8923
The article discusses the literary and cultural uses of so-called white slavery – the prostitution and pimping in the Americas (especially in South America) of women from Eastern Europe at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. This motif, tragically linking the history of Poland and Argentina, is associated with historiographic, literary, and sociological research. The article analyses various attitudes of historians towards the issue and the scope of ideological issues (in particular, the issue of anti-Semitism) and criticises the impact of the specificity of media coverage on the sensational nature of reports on the white slave trade. The main aim of the work is to present to the Polish reader both the historical context and the literary and cultural realisations of the subject in a multi-faceted manner, especially since only a few works have been translated into Polish. The second goal is to identify repetitions in prose, dramas, and audio-visual texts depicting the stories of Eastern European prostitutes in South America.
Agata Draus-Kłobucka Prawa autorskie (c) 2021 Annales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracoviensis | Studia Historicolitteraria https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2021-12-23 2021-12-23 21 272 290 10.24917/20811853.21.15 "Córki powietrza. Sen Balladyny": Calderón spotyka Słowackiego w polu literackim, czyli hiszpańsko-polska comedia colaborada XXI wieku https://studiahistoricolitteraria.up.krakow.pl/article/view/8924
Literary relations between Poland and Spain are not only the subject of some purely theoretical considerations of this essay, but also a space for creative practice within the literary field, in the sense proposed by Pierre Bourdieu, as a complex network of positions, relations, and rivalries between its participants, individuals, and institutions. The main subject of the article is the process of creating a Polish-Spanish dramatic collage called 'Daughters of the Air. Balladyna’s Dream' (2019) based on Calderon’s and Słowacki’s dramas, grounded in the historical context, from the Polish-Spanish dramaturgical assumptions to the bilingual libretto of the play, which premiered first in Opole and then in Almagro. Such a process of creative rewriting of our classic literature can be compared to the forgotten comedias colaboradas, which were extremely popular in Spain during the Golden Age: those multi-author dramatic adaptations often resulted from a fruitful collaboration between two, three, or even more writers and dramaturges, which nowadays seems somehow more challenging.
Marta Eloy Cichocka Prawa autorskie (c) 2021 Annales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracoviensis | Studia Historicolitteraria https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2021-12-23 2021-12-23 21 291 310 10.24917/20811853.21.16 Reportaż magiczny? Uwagi o "Wszystkich zajęciach Yoirysa Manuela" Adama Kwaśnego https://studiahistoricolitteraria.up.krakow.pl/article/view/8925
'Wszystkie zajęcia Yoirysa Manuela' [All occupations of Yoirys Manuel] by Adam Kwaśny (2017) is a collection of stories about the inhabitants of the city of Trinidad in Cuba, which can be read as an attempt to look for a new approach in the travel literature and reportage writing. By the use of the techniques typical for magical realism and non-fiction literature at the same time, the work shows the reality of the city from the perspective of its inhabitants, or more precisely: from the perspective of a narrator coming from the outside world, but sharing the beliefs and worldview of the described people.
Tomasz Pindel Prawa autorskie (c) 2021 Annales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracoviensis | Studia Historicolitteraria https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2021-12-23 2021-12-23 21 311 319 10.24917/20811853.21.17 O wierszach jak abanicos. Hiszpańskie tropy w poezji Alfreda Marka Wierzbickiego https://studiahistoricolitteraria.up.krakow.pl/article/view/8926
Poetry by Alfred Marek Wierzbicki emphasises conspicuous travel routes, so poems inspired by particular places are easily extractable. By analysing poetic images showing Spain and Latin American countries, the author discusses the nomadic nature of the works presented and reconstructs the poetic creed of the author of 'Stąd i stamtąd' [From here and there]. Tracing the intertextual relationships inscribed in the works, the researcher explains the symbolic code hidden in the landscapes and spaces of cities. As the author of the fictional figure called “Pan Credo” [Mr Credo], Wierzbicki is a poet focused on the axiological issues connected with the significance of human existence and the sense of one’s own permanence.
Agata Skała Prawa autorskie (c) 2021 Annales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracoviensis | Studia Historicolitteraria https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2021-12-23 2021-12-23 21 320 338 10.24917/20811853.21.18 Uprowadzanie mieszkańców Rzeczypospolitej do niewoli przez Tatarów i Turków w oczach siedemnastowiecznych pamiętnikarzy https://studiahistoricolitteraria.up.krakow.pl/article/view/8928
In the 17th century, both the Turks and (much more often) the Tatars invaded Poland. According to historians, the Tatars in particular treated the Polish Republic as an area of economic exploitation. Its most severe form was the forced captivity of inhabitants of the south-eastern borderlands. This was documented by diarists and memorialists of Polish seicento, including Jan Florian Drobysz Tuszyński, Mikołaj Jemiołowski, Joachim Jerlicz, Samuel Maskiewicz, Zbigniew Ossoliński, and Kazimierz Sarnecki. They drew attention to the mass character of the Tatar-Turkish thraldom: not only soldiers but also many civilians were kidnapped by the Tatars, who benefited from human trafficking and thus made them captives. The authors of the diaries documented the circumstances of the attacks, including the time and routes taken by the looters. They drew attention to the state of the captives and reconstructed the human martyrdom.
Renata Ryba Prawa autorskie (c) 2021 Annales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracoviensis | Studia Historicolitteraria https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2021-12-23 2021-12-23 21 339 351 10.24917/20811853.21.19
